Meeting: Budget
Sub-Committee of School Committee
10/28
@ 6:45-7:15
Attending: Paul Schlichtman,
Suzanne Owayda, Sue Sheffler, Jeff Thielman, K. Donovan, Rob Adelson (New
Chief Financial Officer)
Agenda: To review
a facts/options presentation about activity fees. The presentation will
be delivered at a public meeting 10/29 @ Ottoson.
Suzanne Owayda distributed
notes from a Power Point presentation that will be used for a 10/29 public
meeting regarding extracurricular fees. The presentation reviews fees
that are currently paid for activities such as instrumental music, participation
in other clubs, participation on athletic teams and participation in full
day kindergarten. It documents income versus cost for each activity and
indicates that the greatest net cost to the budget is high school sports,
for which there is $344,000 net cost to the system. A change in fees for
participation on sports teams is being considered. Several alternative
proposals are suggested:
- An $800 flat fee
for anyone participating in high school sports
- A per/student,
per sport fee where fee would vary depending on cost of sport (e.g.
soccer $200; hockey $695)
- Outside grants/funding
- Eliminate some
or all sports.
Other cost-saving
measures were also reviewed. The committee approved the presentation with
a few, minor revisions and recommended that the Power Point notes be distributed
at the meeting and posted on line.
Paul Schlichtman reported
that EdNets President, Richard Trembowicz, who had previously presented
to the Budget Subcommittee (10/9) was willing to come back and speak to
a larger group about his company's web-site proposal.
Next Budget Subcommittee:
Tentatively Wednesday 12/3 @ 7:00. Mr. Tosti (Town Meeting Finance Committee)
will be invited to discuss the O'Neil Formula
